Character name: Ascensuri (“ah-SHEN-su-ree”) Cataracta
Character canon: fandom OC from Final Fantasy XV: Comrades
Canon Summary:
Ascensuri grew up in an affluent household in Insomnia, the capitol city and last remaining stronghold of the country of Lucis. His life was peaceful, unaffected by the war and monsters that tore the world apart outside the city’s impenetrable magical barrier. He joined the king’s special military, the Kingsglaive, after high school -- not out of a sense of patriotism, but from a lack of any other direction in life.
The King of Lucis possessed magic powers through an ancient covenant with the Astrals. Common folk can’t use magic, but those who served the king were granted an extension of his power. Thus, Ascensuri, as a member of the Kingsglaive, gained the use of magic... but his grasp of it was miserable. Despite his training, he never got the hang of combat magic like paralyzing targets in their tracks, or casting elemental spells like ice or fireballs. At best, he was able to enhance his speed and agility, which were traits he already possessed, as an athlete.
Due to his mediocrity as a soldier, he was never deployed outside the walls. Instead, he was posted inside the city to perform such duties as guarding doors and providing security detail for politicians and nobles.
A few months after Ascensuri started basic duty, the invading Empire used a peace treaty signing ceremony as a disguise for a surprise attack on Insomnia. Once the protective barrier over the city was destroyed from the inside, the invaders flattened the city with both airship cannons and the Empire’s swarm of mind-controlled monsters. Ascensuri assisted with the evacuations and tried to protect citizens from monsters and crumbling buildings, even long after his magical powers died with his slain king. Once he finally collapsed from his injuries at the city outskirts, some of the people he’d protected saved him in turn, taking him along as they fled the warzone by boat to a nearby island that was not participating in the war. This was his first time outside the city.
On the day of the attack, his country ceased to exist and Ascensuri lost everyone and everything he’d ever known. With nothing left to return to, he sought asylum in the island nation. He scraped by as a refugee, struggling alone under the weight of his grief.
Four months later, the old king’s son came to the island to form a covenant with one of the old gods that dwelled in the ocean. The goddess was so furious over the heresy of being summoned to heel by humans that she destroyed the entire island in her wrath. The king tried to fight her off, and while the goddess was not defeated, she was sufficiently satisfied by the king’s power that she deigned to forge a covenant after all.
The covenant reawakened the magical connection between the king and those who served him. Members of the Kingsglaive suddenly found themselves with the ability to wield magic again, but at the cost of their memory. The memory loss was slow and insidious, hard to even notice until months later.
After the goddess destroyed the island, Ascensuri was now a homeless refugee for the second time in six months. He returned to Lucis, which was, by this point, starting to be overrun by the Empire’s legion of monsters, now gone rogue. As if the plague of deadly monsters wasn’t enough, they created a dark miasma as they spread, which tainted the atmosphere and slowly blotted out the sun. The poison clouds and decreased sunlight gradually led to climate change, food shortages, polluted water, disease, global extinction of plants and animals, and total environmental collapse. The human population crashed, and the survivors gathered in bastians and fortresses to seek shelter from the monster plague.
Within six months of the covenant, Ascensuri was just one more nameless member of the epidemic of thousands of magic-wielding amnesiacs. A stranger found him wandering around, injured, frightened, and alone, and took him to the fortified city of Lestallum. There, he fights to protect Lestallum from monsters while he waits out the apocalypse.

Character in Canon:
Ascensuri is a gentle and well-mannered bocchan from an upper-middle-class family. He went to a discerning private school where many of his peers were from rich households. Compared to them, he didn’t stand out much. He was neither the best nor the worst in any way, so he just kind of blended into the background in all parts of his life. And he was fine with it -- it was what he was familiar with. As a result, he doesn’t have a strong sense of pride, which means he doesn’t take it very hard when things don’t go his way, but it also means he’s a huge pushover.
His privileged homelife has given him an unexamined belief that the universe will always provide, and sometimes it doesn’t occur to him that he has to work hard for the things he wants. Whatever he has right now is probably the best it can be, so why ask for more? He just does his best with what he has, and when his best isn’t good enough, he’s fairly quick to come to terms with that.
Also, since he’s never had to struggle too much in his life, he often forgets that sometimes other people do. It can catch him by surprise when he sees other people having a hard time. He’s quick to slip into a complacent state of taking things for granted.
Because he’d never experienced any significant difficulty in his life, he was completely unequipped to to deal with the fall of Insomnia, and since he had no real coping mechanisms or emotional outlets, it hit him hard. It turns out that he is not at all resilient in the face of loss, and he was extremely damaged, unable to regain his normal, happy personality, until after he (mercifully?) lost his memory.
Even though he had to deal with some terrible events in his life, none of them were personal or caused by any one specific individual. Having never been badly hurt by someone else, he’s trusting to the point of gullibility. He believes in his heart that all people are fundamentally Good, even in the face of evidence to the contrary. While he can sometimes be shy or guarded, it might take extreme circumstances before he came to terms with the idea that some people are just bad.
Despite his strength and size, his will is weak. His lack of pride means he doesn’t tend to stand up for himself, assuming it’s less effort to gracefully endure an unjust punishment than to fight against it. His trusting nature makes him believe that he deserves whatever treatment he gets. If someone is cruel to him, he takes their words to heart and internalizes them, because if they’re saying it, it must be true. Do you think people would lie about stuff like that?
It’s very difficult to get him truly worked up or offended, and even when he’s pushed to a breaking point, he still tends to pulls his punches.
Ascensuri is passionate for just about any sort of physical activity, but mostly sports!! This is his biggest strength, but (like all things) he’s neither the best nor the worst at it. He lacks the competitive streak that could make him a champion, as he’s less interested in seeing his opponents driven before him and more interested in the joy of running or the satisfaction of hucking a ball through a net. He takes easily to anything that lets him move his body -- martial arts, rock climbing, dancing, yoga, and/or anything that involves running or hitting a ball. He’ll get restless if he’s stuck inside for too long.
Despite his love of activities that involve lots of sweating and dirt, whenever he’s off the court or field, he’s fastidiously clean. He’s invested in his own hygiene, keeps himself well-dressed and his clothes tidy. His personal spaces are organized and free of clutter.
Ascensuri is patient, romantic, and deeply genuine, and while he’s probably not going to sweep anyone off their feet, he possesses a certain relaxed charisma that makes him easy to get along with.

Character in Imeeji:
Ascensuri is not a very creative person in some respects, nor does he have a strong or unwavering sense of self. Without his memories to inform him of his place in life, what he’s supposed to do, and what is expected of him, he collapses in on himself. He will depend heavily (almost self-destructively) on help from others to try and fill in the gaps. People’s reactions to him will inform his first impressions of himself, instead of the other way around. For example, if someone hates him, he will believe he is a person who should be hated and close himself off to others. Alternatively, if he were shown kindness and support, he would become a person who is kind and supportive of others.
His first order of business will be to establish an authority figure (whether or not they have any real authority over him) and follow their instructions even if he doesn’t understand them, and even he gets hurt in the process. He could be easily manipulated or be a danger to himself until he starts to build confidence and figure things out.
Once he gets his bearings, he will slowly begin to open up and become his normal, friendly self. He’s never particularly outgoing, but he’s warm and welcoming on a one-on-one basis. He finds almost everyone to be likeable on some level.
Since he’s coming from an apocalypse scenario, Ascensuri will find this new world in Imeeji to be weirdly nostalgic in ways he can’t quite put his finger on. It’s going to hit him at odd times, like when he eats something that isn’t made of potato starch, or when he sees a living plant, or walks around a city that looks just like Insomnia, except not a crumbled wreckage full of monsters. It feels like he’s come home after being away for years, and he doesn’t know why.
The sudden loss of his magic is going to be really awkward. After years of abusing the king’s power for stupid, mundane things, he’s going to be doing stuff like trying to conjure snacks out of the ether, or casually jumping off a fifth-storey balcony because he still thinks he’s immune to falling. He’s going to be like an astronaut who forgets gravity exists, except without knowing why on earth he assumed he could do those things in the first place.
Without his memory, he’s preoccupied with what he’s left behind. Does he have people who love him? Do they know that he’s here? Are they waiting for him to come home? He needs to get back to them, somehow, and he’s very concerned about it. He doesn’t know that everyone who who has ever loved him him is dead -- except for one, who is (hopefully!) also in Imeeji. But even if Lumen makes it to Imeeji, they no longer recognize each other. Again.

Unit Placement:
There are two units in particular that I think would be a good fit:
pep!pep! - If this unit is in the running, this would be great. He is the living embodiment of the unit character traits, and he would have no trouble at all with the lives, especially if it meant he finally got a chance to be the PE teacher that he always was in his heart.
There are several abilities for this unit that he would love (and that would be extremely fun for me to play,) particularly those that would enhance his (or someone else’s) physical prowess or that could be useful for others. (Raising the dead? Holy shit.)
With the list of character traits the way it is, hopefully other unitmates would be aligned with his personality. If he has a friendly and supportive group of people on his side when he first comes into this world, it’s going to really help his personality blossom in a way that would be really fun for me to play.
avant en garde -- The theme, abilities, and lives of this unit are a good match for him.
Thematically, because he was once a soldier in direct service of a king, proficient in all manners of bladed weapons and styles of combat. He was the closest thing to an actual knight that exists in his universe. The abilities of avante are the closest to his canon abilities, so this feels like a natural fit here, too.
The unit lives would be absolutely up his alley. He could get points for doing SPORTS?! Races?? Arm wrestling?!?! Competing in feats of strength, speed, and endurance?!?!?!? Hot diggety, that’s all stuff he would have done anyway.
There are some strong personalities on this team, and it would be interesting to see how it would affect him. There’s a lot of potential for him to either fall in line or to rise up and become a person who stands up for himself, and I’m excited about the possibilities, here.
If pep!pep! is getting deployed this round, this is my biggest preference! While avante is the closest match what he’s done in the past, pep!pep! would be an extremely fun opportunity for me to play with something new, giving him powers that are different from his canon, and I’m very attracted to that. That said, I’d also be extremely happy in avante!
Unit Preferences:
Priority: avante en garde, pep!pep!
Acceptable: Taisho Roman Revolution, BAD END=DEAD END, Heart Soldier Senshi, SensitIV
Do not place: future is now, ☆ZRAEL, WILD CITY

SURVEY:
Evaluate yourself honestly: what do you think your soul is worth?
Apparently, the value of my soul varies from moment to moment! One time, one of the Astrals came out of the sky and told us to die for sins we don’t remember. Twenty minutes later, that same Astral blessed us and told us to protect this land, which we were doing anyway. What does it mean? Am I allowed to be alive, or not? I’m not bitter about this, just confused. Lumen is bitter about it, though. We don’t talk about this any more.
Is there anything you would do anything to achieve?
I wish I could say that I’d do anything to achieve the salvation of humanity or something noble like that, but the truth is… I just want to live a life where I can be happy for like five minutes. Not necessarily a comfortable life, because I think that’s probably impossible. But maybe a life with moments of comfort in it? Sometimes I have good dreams, or cook something palatable with the stuff we got in our rations, or just spend time hanging out with the person I like. When I put my life on the line at work, it’s so I can build an ecosystem where those moments of happiness can exist, for as long as possible.
What does hell mean to you?
Hell is when your favorite food goes extinct. Hell is watching a teammate you’ve been working with for the last five years get torn in half by a monster and you can’t even stop for their body. Hell is the Astrals crawling out of the ground to kick our asses because they’re bored and we apparently aren’t struggling enough already. I was going to say that hell probably couldn’t be worse than this, except that every year it’s darker, and there are fewer people left who can still fight. It probably will get worse.
I still have reasons for fighting, though. So I guess I can’t say this is hell. I suppose that means hell is not having a reason to keep going.
Which of these nine words is the most meaningful to you, and why? Idolatry, lies,
transgressions, vengeance, sorcery, plague, devastation, inquisition, or temptation?
I don’t know if there’s any meaningful difference between plague and devastation, these days. The world is… ruined. I don’t know if it will recover, or if we will still be here to see it happen. Who cares about the rest, in the face of that?
Do you want a puppy?
Are you giving away puppies?! How did you get them? I can’t even remember the last time I saw a dog. As much as I’d want one, I don’t know how we’d care for it. All we’d have to feed it is potato, and our shifts at the wall are really long, so it would have to spend most of its time alone. And… what if we didn’t come back, one day? What would happen to it then?
Have you previously owned a puppy?
There was a cat that lived nearby a few years ago, and I’d pet it sometimes. It occurred to me that I could understand its body language, like… like what it meant when it turned its ear to the side, or when it held its tail a certain way. You know what I mean? I could tell when it was angry or shy or whatever. But I met this hunter from Meldacio who had a dog, and I couldn’t understand its behavior with the same confidence. I knew that a wagging tail was good, but the rest of it was a mystery. If I had owned a dog before, surely I would have been able to understand it as well as I did the cat, right? ...Did I own a cat? If I did, I guess it’s probably dead by now…Ah, I just made myself sad.
Are you worried we've been recording this conversation?
Actually, I kinda hoped you had been. I worry that I could lose my memory again someday, and if that happens, it would be nice to have recordings and stuff that I could watch later. I write letters to myself sometimes, when there’s something I want to make sure I remember. Like where I live, and with whom, and how to find people who know me and can help sort me out. I can’t tell you how much I would give for a recording like this from my past life. Who was I? What kind of stuff did I care about? Did I have a cat? So if you recorded this, it would be a big help. Thank you.
Do you have any last words for us?
Did you hear about the Glaive who lost his left arm and leg on a monster hunt? He’s all right now.
